Me too. Cant stand it. You're never gonna get better than a 74 Eyes, granted. The subject has been worn out.
But give this one a try: I was pleasantly surprised by
this upbeat version. Not too fast, but upbeat....big
difference~~

(btw~ the Peggy-O doesnt suck either)

4-12-78 is an outstanding show with a most excellent EYES.

But I have to disagree that you "can't beat a '74"...here's a relaxed and yet jammed out EYES from a little show I've been known to mention once or twice:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd1977-10-29.sbd.miller.92085.sbeok.flac16

and even in the 80's--few and far between, but they exist if you look for 'em--you can find a few nods to the more groovy, slowed-down style...here's an especially nice one:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd1982-04-03.sbd.miller.96069.sbeok.flac16

after this, I'd say EYES was a throw-away until Branford came on the scene and they revived the true beauty of the tune--I'll put up 3/29/90 against almost any version they ever played...and in fact even later they played this gem in NC that really revels in the mellow groove of the tune and clocks in at a very take-your-time 20+ minutes:

Beauty is in the "Eyes" of the beholder, of course, and I do love those '73-'74 versions for the post-lyrics "stronger than dirt" style jams, but I still think '77 is THE year for EYES.

Honorable mention ( a fast version, but so intense it shouldn't be ignored):

...and also from '78 check out the version on the Bonus Tracks from the Egypt disc collection...I forget the exact date but the version is phenomenal.

(Love this topic--EYES is one of my holy Trinity of favorite Dead tunes alongside Scarlet and Birdsong.)

Regarding Eyes in the 90's, you mention the 3/31/91 show in Greensboro, which is a fine version. I would suggest two others that are also great from that period..

9/8/90 - Second Vince show, no Hornsby yet. Jerry is really carrying the load here. 17 minutes long and Vince hangs back a bit, still feeling things out.

9/18/90 - Fall 90 tour was great for this tune. Hornsby comes up big here.

3/20/91 - Similar to the Greensboro Eyes, this one clocks in at just over 20 minutes with a very nice transition to Foolish Heart. Very nice combo to open the second.

Thanks! Pretty damn sweet, but then again I just started to play around with connecting my Altec Lansing 4 speaker + sub system to my new computer. I don't remember it sounding that good on the old one, and I, supposedly, had THE premier soundcard....but that was almost 10 years ago.
